Event Description

As the legend goes, some years ago, The Pirates of Halifax set sail eastwards to Guysborough to capture some o’that fine Fortress® Rum from Authentic Seacoast.  To their delight, they were able to make off from the distillery with a few barrels of that sweet elixir, but in their hasty departure, a barrel rolled off their ship entangled in a rope and anchor and fell to the depths of Guysborough Harbour!  Argh matey!

Word that the Fortress® barrel is in Guysborough Harbour has gotten out, and the race is on to find it.  The thirsty Pirates of Halifax will be in town on August 26 to start their search.  Join in the treasure hunt and see if you can get the barrel before they do.

Whoever is first to Find Fortress Rum and return the barrel1 to Authentic Seacoast’s Distillery by August 26th will win the Grand Prize of $1,000 cash, the barrel and bragging rights, of course! (Conditions apply).

The Winner will be announced at Authentic Seacoast’s Find Fortress Festival hosted at 75 Ferry Lane on Saturday, August 26, 2023, from 1:00-5:00 pm! See you there!

Treasure Hunt Details:

Only registered participants are eligible to claim the prize. You must agree to the terms and conditions stated below in order to participate. Participants in the treasure hunt do so at their own risk and cost and agree to hold Authentic Seacoast and employees harmless from any claims made or damages sought arising from their participation in the event.

Start and End Time of Treasure Hunt

The Find Fortress® Rum treasure hunt opens on Tuesday August 1st at 9:00am and closes at 10:00 am on Saturday August 26th.

How to Claim the Grand Prize

Should the barrel be discovered and retrieved, the successful participant will need to promptly contact and return it to Authentic Seacoast’s Distillery Front Desk to ensure that they receive the maximum prize amount. The Winner will then be publicly announced at the Fortress Festival held at Authentic Seacoast’s Distillery on Saturday August 26th from 1:00-5:00pm. The Winner must attend the event, to claim the Grand Prize.

Note about the Fortress® Rum barrel in Harbour

The barrel is anchored to the bottom of Guysborough Harbour along with two air-filled sealed Rare Bird® growlers that are suspended in the water column and include a hand-written note. Return the entire assembly to authenticate the retrieval. Though initially filled with FORTRESS® Rum, the present quality and quantity of rum in the barrel is unknown given the impact that natural forces may have had on the barrel while in-situ.

Clues if Barrel is not found by August 21st, 2023

In the event, that the barrel has not been found by August 21, 2023 at 5:00 pm AST, daily clues (potentially 5) will become available to assist with its discovery, with the cash prize reduced by $100 after each clue is announced. The final clue on August 25, 2023 at 5:00 PM will be the GPS coordinates of the barrel.
